What is the remainder of $$\frac{(p^2)}{12}$$ ?

1. p is odd
2. p is prime
(C) 2008 GMAT Club - m12#9

OE: Statements (1) and (2) combined are insufficient. For $$p=3$$ the answer would be 9, for any prime $$p$$ bigger than 3, the answer would be 1.

The correct answer is E.

I agree with the OA, but is it true that $$\frac{(3^2)}{12}$$ has a remainder 9!? I thought that the remainder is 0.
Can anybody clarify this issue?

Here's a quote from wikipedia:

In arithmetic, when the result of the division of two integers cannot be expressed with an integer quotient, the remainder is the amount "left over."

You can look up remainder details in your GMAT quant book or on this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remainder

In your example, 9 is a remainder because 9 is less than 12 and there is no integer quotient.
