In a bunch of letters, 60 were found to be anonymous and typewritten. If 15 percent of the typewritten letters were anonymous, how many letters that were not anonymous were typewritten?

120
180
340
360
400

Explanation says 15 % of typewritten = 60 so typewritten = 400. How can you do that with out knowing the number for annonymous + not typewritten portion in the 2x2 metrix?

Thnaks.

Anonymous & Typewritten: 60 letters
Annoymous & Typewritten: 15% of all Typewritten
Non-Annoymous & Typewritten: 85% of all Typewritten
All typewritten: 60/15% = 400

The question only asks for typewritten letters, never did it say anything about non-typewritten.

You can look at it this way also:
"60 out of all letters are anonymous.
15% out of all letters are anonymous.
How many letters are non-anonymous?"

. Anonymous Non-Anonymous Total
Typewritten 60 or 15%*x x - 60 x
Non-typewritten ? ? ?
Total ? ? ?

*Let x be total number of typewritten letters
just solve for x-60 and you get the answer

Since the Q gives us the relationship (15%) between "all Typewritten" and "all Annonymous", should't we interpret as below?

Thanks!

"If 15 percent of the TYPEWRITTEN letters were anonymous"

So 15%*TYPEWRITTEN = ANONYMOUS

Does it include the non-typewritten anonymous letter?
