Machines X and Y produced identical bottles at different constant rates. Machine X, operating alone for 4 hours, filled part of a production lot; then machine Y, operating alone for 3 hours, filled the rest of this lot. How many hours would it have taken machine X operating alone to fill the entire production lot?

(1) Machine X produced 30 bottles per minute.
(2) Machine X produced twice as many bottles in 4 hours as machine Y produced in 3 hours.

Machines X and Y produced identical bottles at different constant rates. Machine X, operating alone for 4 hours, filled part of a production lot; then machine Y, operating alone for 3 hours, filled the rest of this lot. How many hours would it have taken machine X operating alone to fill the entire production lot?

(1) Machine X produced 30 bottles per minute.
(2) Machine X produced twice as many bottles in 4 hours as machine Y produced in 3 hours.

SOLN:

X = x bottles/hr
Y = y bottles/hr

4x + 3y = full container = Ax , A number of hrs to fill the container ---- I

1 - tells me nothing about relation between X & Y
2 - tells me
4x = 2*3y = 6y => 3y = 2x, fill this into the equation I
4x + 2x = 6x, 6 hrs

Hence 2 alone is the answer, 1 is useless information, actually it is extra info.

I got c)

we need to know the entire production lot and the rates of each machine.

1) Insuffeesh

2) Insuffeesh


1) tells us machine X produced 4800 bottles in its shift nothing about the entire production lot.

2) Work = Rate x Time

Tells us machine X produced twice as many bottles as machine Y. Thus, Wx = 2Wy

Thus Rx X 4= 2 (Ry X 3) = Rx/Ry = 3

Having both we would know Ry's Rate

Let's see,

a @ b = 0 and a + b - ab

thus, a + b(1-a)=0

if I choose 1 as b, then

a+ 1(1-a)=0, thus 1=0

c? can I go watch tv???

titleist, you were to the point, but missed in picking up the right answer.

as you showed 1=0 when b=1, which is not possible. Hence, the answer

Let n be number of bottles produced by X and n by Y
m+n = total number of bottles
since m = 2n n = m/2
The machine X working alone should finish m/2 additional bottles
for m it takes 4 hours for m/2 it will take 2 hours
so 6 hours are needed.

B is sufficient
