Making good money...interested in MBA? [#permalink] New post 27 Jan 2011, 01:26
Hi Alex,

Thanks for taking the time to give some advice on my situation. I'm 24, currently making 100k a year and I feel topped out in my current field, online marketing. I started the company as a sophomore in college (21), and a graduated at 23. As you can see I have limited traditional, "full-time" work experience which may prevent me from having a chance at the top schools. At the same time, going to a mid-range school may not be worth my time given my current situation. My question to you is this: If I wanted to attend an MBA program in 2012, what are my options? Do I even stand a shot at a strong evening program? This would be ideal as I could continue working. Any insights are greatly appreciated.

Other info: top 20 undergrad, decent/strong test taker, 3.4 GPA

Why are you interested in going to b-school?

I would be a career changer as I feel topped out and somewhat bored with what I currently do. The courses, mentors, and networking opportunities are of great interest.

You're better off finding another job if you're bored with it now.

Here's the thing. Recruiters don't hire you for your b-school name. They hire you based on the *totality* of your resume. The stronger your overall resume, the more employable you'll be and the more options you'll have. And remember that on a resume, your b-school is just one line item on a page. The rest of the resume should be strong as well. Going to b-school right now won't be a wise thing, because it's not some glass slipper that will make you that much more employable than you are now - even if you went to a decent school.

Gotcha. I'm not going to be able to get another job and make the kind of money I make right now. I'm simply not on a conventional path as I work for myself. I also suppose I never planned to attend B-school with the intention of bolstering my resume or getting a highly coveted corporate job. I think I'll always be an entrepreneur, though one that could use some more formal education, mentorship, and networking.

If I wanted to attend in 2012, and my reason for attending a part-time program was to continue my business, what kinds of schools do I have a shot at? Have you heard of someone my age (25, 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time WE) attending a top evening MBA? Thanks again.
