Is D the answer. I would choose D because managing and watering need the plural verbs. Saves and Helps are not plural verbs but singular verbs.

"not only" but "also"...... : idiomatic usage
"saves", "helps" : parallelism

Came across this question in the free GMAT verbal test.
I can't understand exactly why it should be D and not B.
I get the claims of idiom but not the ones about parallelism here...

The sentence with "save" doesn't somehow read so well for me...Can someone please explain this?

My Pick : D
Correct idiom usage,
E is awkward
You can also do a 3/2 split between saves/save and between idiom usage
not only...but/not only... but also

Managing your irrigation system well and watering your grass wisely not only saves water, but helps to ensure the success of your lawn.
1 issue with original sentence: incorrect idiom
Answer choices:
Quote:
a. saves water, but helps to ensure the success of your lawn ---incorrect idiom
b. saves water, but also help to ensure the success of your lawn ---saves/help conflict
c. saves water, but the success of your lawn is more helpfully ensured ---incorrect idiom +weird
d. save water, but also help to ensure the success of your lawn
e. save water, but also the success of your lawn is more helpfully ensured ---correct idiom but obviously weird

Try reading the sentence this way:
Managing your irrigation system [strike]well and watering your grass wisely[/strike] not only saves water, but helps to ensure the success of your lawn.

Now read it with option D :
Managing your irrigation system [strike]well and watering your grass wisely[/strike] not only save water, but also help to ensure the success of your lawn

Now lets see with option B:
Managing your irrigation system well and watering your grass wisely not only saves water, but also help to ensure the success of your lawn
saves and help do not agree in verb (I don't know what word to use..... singular/plural clash)....I hope you are getting what I am trying to say,
it can either be saves/helps...or save/help, but any other choice option has incorrect idiom usage.
hope this helps,

PS: I have a silly one what the hell does OA stands for???? :)
to this day I can't figure it out, I know I just did/offered OA but its annoying not to know what it stands for...aaarrrghhh!
Cheers~

How is this not A??? "save water". No one writes like that in English. GMAC needs to get in touch with f***ing reality. I can understand the parallelism structure is off, but that's just not grammatically correct.

Not only .... but also

Not only and but also go hand in hand in a sentence , this idiom helps in bringing || between two phrase/clause after not only and but also.

I have seen not only .. but also used without also too, still the sentence was gramatically correct.
