Manhattan GMAT 4th Edition [#permalink]
11 Jun 2009, 00:10
So I purchased all the 3rd Edition MGMAT books and now they released a new 4th edition (only 6 months after they released the 3rd edition). This seems very shady.....but do you guys recommend purchasing the updated edition?

Yes, I just got the newly ordered MGMAT SC book. The main difference for the SC books is the references to OG 12 rather than OG 11 in the 3rd edition. Don't think it is worth upgrading your edition, esp if you have OG 11 and 3rd edition. Otherwise you will have to buy OG 12. I think release of the 3rd edition was a mistake or a forced release rather than a trick.

On the Manhattan Gmat website they have updated the problem sets in the 3rd edition to match the OG 12th edition for those who already purchased their mgmat books. Just download and update. http://www.manhattangmat.com/fourth-ed-info.cfm

Question about the 4th edition Manhattan books. [#permalink]
14 Jun 2009, 22:58
I took GMAT few years back and got 650ish - my weakness has been and still is the verbal section. I read some of the polls and reviews and it seems the Manhattan books are very good and since I have the princeton review book (took their gmat course for free few years ago since i was an SAT instructor..) and the kaplan I am thinking of checking out the Manhattan books. I looked online and seems 4th edition is the newest - do they still reference OG 11th edition or no? The 11th edition OGs are quite old (although new ones coming out in couple of months..) Is the 4th edition for manhattan worth it? Thanks!

3rd Edition is for OG 114th Edition is for OG 12There is a Manhattan online guide that adapts 3rd editions to use with OG 12. ( http://www.manhattangmat.com/fourth-ed-info.cfm) If you have been an instructor for SAT, you probably won't get much from Math books but MGMAT SC and MGMAT CR and MGMAT RC will be helpful. The other books that match Manhattan GMAT are PowerScore series: PowerScore SCPowerScore CR

I read the review and it seems the PSCR is better than Manhattan's but not sure about the PSSC. So if I were to buy all the verbal areas which books would you recommend? Also any good math book to recommend? I prob. gonna get the new OG quant when it comes out in couple of months...

From my experience the PSCR and MGMATSC were the best for their respective subject. Ithink that is the consensus out there also...

whats a good challenging math guide? Or after fundamentals the only way to improve math is to just do a lot of questions?

Since you were teaching SAT math - there is not probably a guide that will give you the advanced skill set. You are probably left with practice questions. You can try Kaplan 800 but it is not that advanced and it is based on a question-answer learning system, rather than topic-practice. You can get either PowerScore or Manhattan - no use in getting both.

For the powerscore CR book, is it better to get the new PS verbal bible or the old version 2005 CR book? Also, since the Manhattan books reference the 12th edition OG, is there a point to read the OG at all? Maybe after the Manhattan books to prevent redundancy?

since I have taken the Math a while ago what's a good "refresher" book for it - the OG quants? Like you said I dont think it is worth it buying the individual manhattan books...

Since OG is nothing more than a collection of Real GMAT questions, the main benefit is to go through them soon before taking the GMAT (not sure if that's the right way to say it) as it will give you the right feel for question types/patterns. You will learn some/a bit from these questions, but mostly will train your brain to solve them quickly and sport traps. (nothing to do with pure knowledge per se)

In order to save some money, I order different editions/copes from amazon. I think most of the material is new with the exception of one spiral bind book of CR and RC. As I know RC is my weakest area, I ordered a separate RC book too. Do you guys think the CR material in the old edition is good enough, or do I need to buy a newer edition? Thanks.
