ManhtanGMAT "Joe,as well as his friends, IS going" right?? [#permalink] New post 15 Jul 2014, 02:53
Hello, my question refers to Manhattan GMAT sentence correction guide 8 pg 44 - Subject verb agreement.. where it states this example:

"Joe, as well as his friends, IS going to the beach." as correct subject-verb usage. I understand if there was "with","along with" etc, it would still be ok, but this sounds awkward. the "is" should instead be "are". Please help.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

In English, only the word "And" can make the subject plural. All the other words(as well as, including, along with, in addition to , together with, etc) mere add extra information to the subject. Normally these are called additives.

Exception :

Eg., Doughnuts and cream is/ are a high calorie snack.

Here the verb should be is(singular). The reason is, if two words connected by the word "and" are thought of as a single unit, then it is considered as singular subject.

Also look at the word which follows the verb. If this word is singular, the verb most probably be singular.

Here snack is singular, so the verb is also singular.

Hope it helps :).

Indeed this does sound awkward.

So, we are saying the following is correct: Joe as well as Mike is going to the beach

Really sounds strange. I can understand "along with", but does "as well as" also fall in the same category?
