D

Its between C and D. "them" in C is ambiguous and may refer to ants or their enemies.

It's D.
"them" in C is ambiguous.

Also note the use of "making".

Similar SC:

During the 1980’s approximately $50 billion in private investment capital is estimated to have left Mexico and added to the strain on the country’s debt-ridden economy. (A) During the 1980’s approximately$50 billion in private investment capital is estimated to have left Mexico and added

A/B - incorrect use of "which"
C - Pronoun "them" is ambiguous
E - "it" is incorrect.

Agree with D and good explainations above.
'them' in C is ambiguous while E is passive voice.

Many entomologists say that campaigns to eradicate the fire ant in the United States have failed because the chemicals that were used were effective only in wiping out the ant's natural enemiest, thus making it easier for the ant to spread.

D

'them' in C is not only ambiguous but also incorrect to use for "ant" which is used as a singular in the whole sentence.

Thanks Brajesh. I liked your way of explaining with another example.

It is D.

Agreed it is D, but can you expalin how "them" refers to ant or its enemy, both are singular inthe sentence. I think it refers to the chemicals....

Also, I have one question here ........ can it/them refer to anything singular/plural respectively in a sentence or only something that fits the buck.....

I think its D. as we are taking here about Ant not Ants for A and C are out. and B is also out because i think "it" is not used for living things. and for E, "was made" makes it incorrect.

I don't have correct grammatical explanation for this as I am a novice in this at the moment and please correct me if I am wrong.

First buzz word: which -> it's used incorrectly. Which is used to refer to the noun before it or to refer to noun in noun + preposition format. A and B are gone.
E is awkward at best- made easier for ant as if chemicals were spread to help ants. That's incorrect. Gone.
In C them is ambiguous- although it sounds ridiculous but the only plural noun is entomologists which doesn't lend any sense.

D wins as it properly replaces the pronoun with a noun.
