Making many mistakes in the last 20 questions of the exam [#permalink]

Hi All,

I have given the GMAT before and I got a 680 (Q49 V34), and I intend to improve that score to around 720 (especially on the Verbal).

I have been preparing for more than a month now and I gave a few practice exams from MGMAT and Kaplan. (planning to give the real GMAT in Sep)

Though I have been working on various aspects of Verbal including my timing, there is one common trend across all the exams that is worrying me.

Across all the four tests, I realized that I do a lot of questions wrong in the last 20 questions of Verbal. My accuracy is decently good in the first 20 questions, while I do a series of mistakes in the last 20 questions (especially the last 10). This is not because of the time problem, as my accuracy goes for a toss even with decent time in hand.

Typically I tend to do 2-4 mistakes on the first 20 questions, but I end up doing about 10 mistakes on the next 20 questions.

I would like to know what could be the possible reasons for this problem and how can I correct this problem?

Well, it could be due to the computer-adaptive nature of the test.

Perhaps you are getting the beginning and middle questions right - and the test continually feeds more difficult questions - but then you get those wrong. Effectively, you may be reaching a ceiling in your performance. Perhaps review back your mistakes and see if you find a pattern - maybe certain types of difficult questions stump you each time. Identify the issue, then make steps to address it.

In addition to reach your performance you may well be feeling tired and losing concentration. You could also be starting to rush to finish the test.
Would suggest practicing doing some timed practice with 20 questions to practice timing and build stamina.

Might also want to try to increase your physical stamina.

There some good free webinars session by e-verbal that might also be helpful in helping you up your verbal score.

Hi GMATTER,

Would you consider changing the name of the topic? IMO it is not conveying the exact intention of the topic.

You want to say that you are doing many mistakes during last 20 questions, and the topic name, when seen neutrally, implies that the last 20 questions themselves contain many mistakes.

IMO it would be better if you could rename the topic as 'making/doing many mistakes in..........'
