B.swam in its murky waters, to participate in some athletic event, like a triathlon
C.swam in its murky waters, as participants in some athletic event, such as a triathlon
D.swum in its murky waters, as participating in such an athletic event as a triathlon
E.swum in its murky waters, as participants in an athletic event, such as a triathlon

"Such As" is used to give examples hence A & B can be rejected
Between 'Swam" and "Swum", Swum matches the tense of non-underlined part.. hence C can be rejected
between D & E E is correct as it uses "Such As" in D use of "as s triathlon" is awkward
