82. Many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago, the mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia are dotted with hundreds of monasteries.
(A) Many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago, the mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia are dotted with hundreds of monasteries.
(B) Chiseled from solid rock centuries ago, the mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia are dotted with many hundreds of monasteries.
(C) Hundreds of monasteries, many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago, are dotting the mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia.
(D) The mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia are dotted with hundreds of monasteries, many of which are chiseled from solid rock centuries ago.
(E) The mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia are dotted with hundreds of monasteries, many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago.
I picked E, and that is right, but I don't understand why C is wrong?
Any ideas?

it is just a matter of correct expression. E is correct.

E is precise and clear.
In C I don't like 'are dotting the mountainous'.
'dotted with hundreds of monasteries' looks better.

"are dotting" seems to convey that monasteries are dotting now but they are already "dotted" (used by E.)

are dotting implies that the process is still continuing. (E) works fine.

Stuck between D and E.
The difference between them lies in
¨"Many of Which" vs "Many of them".
which one should I choose.

I feel A is correct though I know that the answer is E.
Can someone help me out and explain why A is wrong?
B - eliminates "Many of them" and hence wrongly suggests that all rocks of Northern Ethiopian region chiseled from solid rock.
C - are dotting is not elegant
D - "are chiseled" - simple past "Chiseled" or past with helping verb "were chiseled" is preferable. Also, "Many of which" modifies monasteries.
E - "many of them" modifies monasteries. It should modify "Mountain ranges".

A. Many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago, the mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia are dotted with hundreds of monasteries.
A is wrong because it implies that the mountainous regions of northern Ethiopia were chiseled from solid rock, but in fact it is the monastary that was chiseled. Modifier Problem.

In the ans choice E do you think the second part of the sentence ..."many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago." ...is playing the role of a dependent clause, and independent clause (with elipsed - are) or something else????

(A) Unclear what chiseled is pointing to
(B) suggests that the regions are chiseled from solid rock
(C) 'are dotting' suggests a progressive action
Between D and E, both seems okay to me. I would have gone with E simply for being more concise.
