Looks like B makes more sense...

"Chiseled from solid rock centuries ago" acts as participle phrase and modifies "Mountains".

What do ya think?

I vote for C.

Modifies the correct noun (Monastaries) in most sensible way.

B is incorrect...
B implies that the mountaineous regions were chiseled from rock...we want to pick a sentence that properly implies that the monasteries were chiseled from rock centuries ago and now dot the mountinous regions....

only E makes sense....

Choice D is correct.
'Which' in second phrase modifes the noun i.e. monasteries.

On second thoughts I would go with C.
D has a tense problem in the second phrase.

A,B are out because "Chiseled from solid rock centuries ago" should modify "monasteries"!

C is out because " Monasteries are dotting" sounds rather funny.

So we are left to choose between D and E.

Since

many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago

is the absolute phrase, it shouldn't contain verb "are" (as in D :
many of which are chiseled from solid rock centuries ago)!!!

Hope this helps!

(This explanation is my personal opinion, but E is the official answer)

I did not consider E (I still stick to this opinion), since E sounds ambiguous, making it unclear what is really modified <The mountainous regions> or <monasteries>.

What's wrong with <monasteries are dotting> in choice C?

"Monasteries are dotting" means that "monasteries are in the process of dotting". It sounds strange that monasteries by themselves DOING that action, not to mention that "are dotting" is continuous tense.

I do not think this sentence uses the concept of absolute construction.

http://www.bartleby.com/64/C001/047.html

According to explanation given at this link (which is very authentic source for American English), the absolute phrase usually occurs in the begining of a sentence.

However, even if we accept that absolute phrase can appear in some other place (as is the case with the given sentence), absolute phrase is supposed to modify an entire sentence and not ANY SPECIFIC ELEMENT of a sentence. In the given sentence, if we choose E as answer, there is no way that the phrase "many of them chiseled from solid rock centuries ago" will modify the entire preceding sentence. It seems to modify only "monesteries". Hence it does not fit into the definition of absolute phrase.

In my opinion, D should be the answer. Because there is nothing wrong with D. In "many of which", "which" certaily refers to monesteries because "which" usually modifies immediately preceding noun. So there is no way "which can refer to mountaineous regions.

As far as I remember the OA is E. I too had narrowed down to D and E.

D has "many of which are chiseled from" ........the "are" doesn't seem correct. "are" is present tense, it gives the idea as if the monasteries are still being chiseled even today.

"many of them chiseled from" is much better and there is no ambiguity wrt the tense.

I assume you know why ABC are wrong

Just to repeat what has been said above.

A&B are wrong because , they give the impression that the "mountainous regions" were chiseled centuries ago.

C is wrong because of "are dotting". The "-ing" gives a sense of continuity , as if the "dotting" is still taking place.
