Mary and John were each paid x dollars in advance to do a certain job. ( I say let's make x- $100) John worked on the job for 10 hours and Mary worked for 8 hours. If Mary gave John y dollars of her payment so that they would have received the same hourly wage, what was the dollar amoung John was paid in advance? 100 + y ----- = 100 - y/ 8? 10 Is this right, SVP Joined: 03 Feb 2003 Posts: 1608 Followers: 6 Kudos [?]: 76 [0], given: 0 [#permalink] 27 Jul 2003, 09:40 Since either person gets$X in advance, the John's hourly rate is X/10 $ph, and that of Mary is X/8$ph. But Mary gives $Y to John to make their rates equal. Thus, her own rate is decreased = (X-Y)/8$ph

X/10=(X-Y)/8, where X=5Y

So, in terms of Y, John initially got \$5Y.

(X + y)/10 = (X - y)/8

Cross multiplied to get 8X + 8y = 10X - 10y

then solve: 18y = 2X

X = 9y
