Masters in Finanancial Eng. as prep for PhD? [#permalink]
15 Jun 2007, 17:15
Hi,
I've been admitted to berkeley's masters in financial engineering prog. If i graduate, work a couple of years, and then decide to do a PhD, how will this be viewed by admissions for a top 10 finance prog? Keep in mind that if I do this, I will only be applying for the PhD when I'm about 30-32. Financial Engineering is an applied program, it's not an academic MSc in finance, so maybe this will be viewed negatively?
On the other hand i also got admitted to the university of britsh colmbia's MSc program in finance, which is supposed to be good prep for a PhD...but maybe i'll like working and decide not to do a PhD in which case berkeley is the best choice.
Advice?
Thanks.

I don't think the applied Financial Engg master itself is going to be a problem. There are pple who get in with MBAs, which I guess are even more "applied".
However, do note that most Finance PhD requires pretty advance maths and econs background. You may want to see if you can take a few of these modules to give yourself a further booster.
