Matriculation Question [#permalink] New post 20 Jan 2009, 19:07
Hi Alex,

I graduated from college in 2007 and have since been working in a quantitative analyst program at a large bank. I have been admitted to a program at a top-10 b-school where I can either matriculate this upcoming year (fall of 2009), or the following year. I was wondering what your opinion is on the benefits of returning to school in 2009 vs 2010.

To add a little more background, I am currently in the 2nd and final year of my analyst program, but upon completion of the program would probably be able to remain at the bank in a quantitative area, which would include a promotion. Following b-school I think I would like to go into either S&T or IM. I have almost certainly decided that going back to b-school would be the right choice for me, but I am weighing whether an additional year of work experience would be worthwhile, especially considering that the job market might be better in 2010 versus 2009.

Any insights you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

You are likely better off going in 2010 because the job market particularly in financial services is going to royally suck for at least the next 1-2 years. Any quick recovery in the job market assumes an *instant* recovery in the securities markets (credit or equity) since labor markets by nature are "sticky" (they lag and are slower to adjust).
Of course, finance jobs aren't going to die off forever (amazing how every downturn you'll get people proclaiming the end of finance as we know it), but for the next few years it's going to be very tough.
