MBA and Political Risk Consulting / Other Int'l Consulting? [#permalink] New post 24 Aug 2009, 16:56
Does anyone have any experience in gaining a position in political risk consulting after earning an MBA? I've noticed that many top MBA programs have various specializations in Emerging Markets, etc., but the careers associated w/ this field seem quite broad (ranging from the World Bank to Int'l Sales at Multinational Corps). Would political risk consulting fall under this umbrella? I think it's a field that I'd like to pursue, but I don't want to waste my time with the applications/time/money if it isn't a viable option after graduation. Also, more generally, would this general track (EM) be considered an under-subscribed (or over-subscribed?) field for recent admissions cycles?

Seems to me that a poli sci degree might be more useful.

Domtri, thanks, and I think you might be right.

The interesting thing is, looking at the emerging markets page at NW:

(not sure if the link will work since i'm a new member: kellogg.northwestern.edu/student/club/emarkets/careers.htm)

It seems to me that applying to any of the careers linked from that page would be easier w/ an International Relations (or possibly Public Policy) professional degree. Of course, that's excluding the Private Equity jobs - though arguably, some IR degrees w/ emphasis on Int'l finance might be nearly as appropriate.

I'd like to hear others' opinions on opportunities for MBAs on the EM/Int'l scene... thanks.

Hi, I know quite a lot about this field, having met plenty of ex-CIA and MI6 types who now have fancy MD titles at consultancies.

The MBA honestly isn't necessary. NONE of the consultancies that you can name are either big or inclined enough to have recruitment programs at business schools. Many of these hire through word of mouth.
