MBA Ranking: CEO Production by University [#permalink] New post 16 Apr 2005, 09:38
I have added information to most of the individual school reviews regarding the CEOs who graduated from that school.

To the surprise of no one, the graduate divisions of Harvard had by far the greatest CEO production. Indeed, it would take the next four producers combined (Stanford, Penn, Columbia, and Chicago) to reach Harvard's numbers.

For additional information on CEO Production See the following:
http://www.gmatclub.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=13835

Some surprises:

Some well known business schools did not have a single CEO present. For instance, Cornell Johnson, Berkeley Haas, Yale SOM, and UNC KF did not have a single MBA graduate CEO (Yale and UNC had JD CEOs, Berkeley had a tech grad CEO)(Note that these schools have high ranking executives below the CEO level or at the CEO level at firms outside the SP500 at the time of survey).

Count of CEOs by University for S&P 500 (all graduate degrees)

Harvard
Stanford
Pennsylvania
Columbia
Chicago/Texas
Virginia
MIT/Wisconsin
Northwestern/NYU
Dartmouth/Indiana/Pittsburgh/USC (Southern California)

Note the five of the top six CEO producers are in the ultraelite cluster.

Wisconsin was a strong CEO source, eclipsing some more known schools such as Dartmouth and Northwestern.

Count of CEOs by MBA (or MS Mgmt)

Harvard
Stanford
Pennsylvania
Chicago
Columbia
Texas/Virginia

There were some strong regional leaders:

Northeast Producer: Harvard
Midwest Producer: Chicago
West Producer: Stanford
As suggested above, the Southern US had two schools with similar production: Virginia Darden and Texas McCombs

Note: For some schools, especially MIT and Stanford, the treatment of the MS in Management can be important. If these degrees are excluded, Penn and Stanford would trade places.

Some important points to keep in mind when considering CEO Counts:

1) The most capable students generally attempt to attend the top cluster schools. The top cluster schools in turn produce a large number of CEOs. The problem, however, is that the most capable students would probably do quite well attending any reputable program. Thus, it is difficult to determine the marginal contribution of any specific school relative to another school.

2) CEO counts are not adjusted for the size of the school or the interests of those students

3) Schools, especially those that have experienced recent gains in prestige, could have dozens of graduates in other important positions such as COO, CFO etc. but few CEO graduates.
