MBA right after ACA? [#permalink] New post 28 Jan 2011, 02:29
Hi,

Hope you're doing great and may this new year be even better then the last one for you.

I'm 22 years old and i'll be graduating this year from Oxford Brookes University, Oxford with a 3 year B Sc program in applied accountancy and an honorary BBA from theUniversity of Central Punjab, Lahore Pakistan. On top of that i would have qualified my final exams for the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) en-route to enrolling for the ICAEW's ACA.

I'm pretty confused about what i wanna do next. I could either put three years of slave labour into one of the big-4s and learn some advisory (Consultancy) and audit. Or i can persue the MBA.. perhaps with an additional degree.

How good would you say this program is for a Chartered Accountant (Quite the same as a US CPA, but trained under the IFRS instead of GAAP) generally.. and specifically for my case?

Any reply will be treasured,

Expert's post
Hi Bilalk:
Thank you for your kind wishes. I hope this year is an even better year than last year as well -- for you and for me.
My recommendation is for you to work a few years after graduating from undergrad. Appropriate work experience is a very critical part of the MBA experience in the classroom. If you do not have this type of experience, you will not be able to participate and provide a point of view that is based in a real-world application. Additionally, most business schools pretty much require that you have the least two years of work experience.

You seem to be quite gifted in my recommendations at this point is for you to look into Harvard's 2+2 program. You can gain acceptance at this point in your academic career, work for two years and then finish out the subsequent two years at Harvard.

At the very least, please plan on working for a couple of years. During this time, please plan on gaining management and leadership experience that differentiates you from the rest of your demographic. I would strongly encourage you to consider international work experience and even perhaps working for a company based out of the US or Europe. This will expose you to a greater diversity of thoughts and people. Overall, please work to break any stereotypes associated with your strong academic background. Focus on teamwork and your ability to collaborate and work with people from all walks of your personal and professional lives.

Respectfully,
Paul Lanzillotti
