Hi,
I have around 3 yrs of work experience in IT industry in IBM India . Done B.Tech in Computer Science with 8.08 gpa. I want to change my current job from developer to management . I am planning to give Gmat in Oct 2013 so , is my work experience good enough to get me in some of the top B schools if I score 720+ in gmat .. How my career prospect would shape up after Mba. Please suggest.
Hi Gagan,
The top b-schools, as do the others, look at your overall personality development, when evaluating your for admissions. The GMAT score, GPA, work experience and extra curricular activities - all of these factors pitch in to make your personality stand out.
Let's talk specifically about the two factors you have mentioned here: the GMAT score- Indian applicants, especially the ones that belong to IT sector have an extra onus towards their GMAT scores and must try scoring above 720 to be in the run. I would question your intended timing for taking the GMAT though- October is too late, because you would miss the Round 1 deadlines of some of the top b-schools. Secondly it will leave you with less time to prepare your apps for Round 2 if you have more than 3 b-schools on your list (even if you get on your essays just after GMAT). Most important, you will have no time for a retake, if your first score is low.
Work experience: You have not mentioned anything about it. While 3 years of work experience gets you into the consideration set, the adcoms would be more interested in knowing the quality of it - what have you done in this time period and how have you made an impact on your client's business, on your organization or on your team or department? have you held any leadership position or stood out in a team setting?
Your career goals are ok- to move from a tech role into management. BUT, you need far more clarity on what this shift will entail. What post MBA role are you interested in? Which industry? how will your previous experience come in use? In all likelihood, you will write an entire essay on your career goals for most b-schools, so spend some time now, in exploring and defining your career path.
