MBA's and Hedge Funds [#permalink] New post 29 May 2012, 16:57
I am sure this has been addressed many times already..although, I have not found a relatively recent thread on this. I am wondering whether you guys think an MBA will be helpful in pursuing a career in Hedge Funds. On the last thread, their seemed to be mixed opinions.

Does anyone know of any business schools which are notorious for producing hedge fund applicants (other than HBS)?

Also, does anyone have any experience working for/with a hedge fund and could you provide insights on that also?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I would definitely list Wharton as your primary target. Many hedge funds are founded by Wharton alumns, and even though they do not generally recruit heavily (since they are smaller), the Wharton brand name is very strong.

AQR, Sankaty, SAC - all these guys have recruited Wharton grads in the past.

The main hurdle will be to get your networking right - hedge funds are similar to venture capital, in that they mostly recruit people with industry experience but are always open to recommendations. I would start getting to know current hedge fund employees (reach out on linkedin, etc.)

From my understanding, the most common route to working at a hedge fund is through sales and trading at a major investment bank. As stated earlier, hedge funds are small, so they don't actively recruit. And they only want people with industry experience i.e. traders.

If you want to work at a hedge fund then a good route out of b-school would be to do sales and trading. From there you could hopefully network you way into a hedge fund. Basically, you are much more likely to find a job trading at an investment bank than you are to at a hedge fund.
