FROM Mccombs(Texas Austin) Admissions Blog: Five Tips for Writing a Successful MBA Application Essay |
MBA application process should be an introspective one, and as you hone in your goals, dreams, and ambitions, you should have a real sense of who you are as a person and what you want to tell the admissions committee. Do not fall into the trap of trying to craft an image of yourself that you may think is more appealing to a particular school. As experienced application reviewers, we know when someone is trying to portray something that is not really them. We will (eventually) figure it out, and if that happens, it would not reflect well on your candidacy. So, just be yourself and keep in mind that this is an application for a professional graduate program. This means that we will also be considering your judgment with respect to what you choose to discuss in your essays. 2. Answer the Question Asked (Not the One You Think We Are Asking) We recognize that business school application essays could start to sound the same once you start reviewing them. However, they are not the same. We spend a lot of time thinking about the questions that we ask you to answer and we expect that you will also take some time to carefully answer those questions. Avoid the temptation of quickly cutting and pasting the essays from one application to another. You may have an idea of the general themes that you wish to cover in your applications and that is completely fine. Just be sure that you are actually answering the questions that are in the application in front of you. 3. Proofread Carefully In the age of spell check, it still amazes me when people send in essays with grammatical and spelling errors. As I said earlier, this is an application to a professional graduate program and we want to see that you will represent our brand well in the future. This means that we expect that you will carefully review everything that you send to us and perhaps even have someone else read over it for errors. Spell checkers don’t find everything – for example “their” is not the same as “there”. (Apologies to anyone who has already heard me say this on any number of admissions panels!) 4. Respect the Word Limit This one is pretty straightforward. We have word limits for a reason and we expect that you adhere to them. In the words of the great Cartman from the classic “South Park”, you will respect our authority. 5. The Optional Essay Question Is Indeed Optional If you believe that there is any part of your application that needs additional clarification, please quickly address it and how you have improved since then. Bullet points are fine. Pasting in an essay for another school’s application is not fine. Good luck with your essays and the rest of the application process. Take your time and (this may seem like an oxymoron) enjoy yourself! Let us know if we can be of any assistance. FROM Mccombs(Texas Austin) Admissions Blog: 2013 Full-Time MBA Women’s Forum Recap |
Last weekend, the Texas Full-Time MBA program hosted their annual Women’s Forum on The University of Texas at Austin campus. The 49 attendees had the opportunity to interact with McCombs faculty and staff, alumni, and current students during a number of sessions, allowing them to learn more about all aspects of the program and begin to picture themselves as Texas MBAs. The event brought in attendees from all over the country and even a few from outside of the US. Texas, New York, and California were the most represented states among those in attendance. The alma maters with the greatest representation besides UT Austin were Cornell, Texas A&M, Michigan, North Carolina, and Vanderbilt. “The women who attended this year were a great group who were engaged and very enthusiastic about the McCombs program,” said Lilly Yeh, this year’s Women’s Forum student host. “It was truly an enjoyable weekend. I had a great time meeting all of the attendees and really hope to see most of them on campus in the near future!” |

FROM Mccombs(Texas Austin) Admissions Blog: Texas MBA Company Info Sessions At Rackspace |
Here with Casey Andrews, MBA ’11 Two Texas MBA program directors and I were treated to a tour of Rackspace company headquarters in San Antonio last Wednesday following a Texas MBA information session held on site. Our tour guide? None other than Lawrence Reyes a.k.a SugarBear, Ambassador of Culture. He took us on the grandest of interactive tours that included peeking into themed departments and conference rooms (think game shows, cereal, 80s movies), viewing installations by local artists, traveling down memory lane in a 1968 Hemisfair gondola chair, and a very quick slide down to the first floor! It’s easy to understand why the company’s growth has exploded and why almost twenty Rackers have either enrolled in or graduated from the Texas MBA program in just the last few years. These folks are empowered! And with Rackspace’s commitment to Fanatical Support®, they’re also very busy. The company operates 24 hours a day, and runs three shifts of employees. So rather than have Rackers trekking to a Texas MBA info session to learn about the program, with the help of some current students and company hosts, we took info and lunch to them! Program directors Trent Thurman and John Burrows presented in-depth information about the Texas MBA and I briefly covered the admissions process, all while Rackers noshed on a catered lunch at Rackspace’s Austin and San Antonio locations. At each location, alumni and current students were on hand to answer questions about program experiences and outcomes. This fall, Texas MBA has also held sessions at Hewlett Packard, IBM, and Lockheed Martin, and more are slated for the spring. If you’re interested in having the Texas MBA visit your company, professional development or networking organization, or special interest group, please reach out to me directly and we’ll work out the details to make it happen. |
FROM Mccombs(Texas Austin) Admissions Blog: How To Prepare For An Interview |
You hit the submit button last night, and now you wait. You know the next step is the interview, but how do you prepare? You don’t. You already have. The process you went through to prepare the different pieces of the Texas MBA application forced you to think about where you have been and where you want to go. The information session and class visit gave you an idea of the expectations of the program, and you know you are ready. You know you have a lot to contribute to the Texas MBA classroom. You know you have a lot to learn. This process prepares you for the interview. How do I know? I graduated from the Texas Executive MBA in 2001. (Really? It doesn’t seem that long ago…I still sweat a little bit when I think about the Finance final.) I have worked with the Texas MBA at Dallas/Fort Worth for 10 years now, and I interview over 100 candidates a year. I know that the best interviews are with the candidates that speak candidly about their career and personal goals – the people that give me a knowing smile when we talk about the tensions and benefits of team work and talk about specific wins and “learning opportunities”. The Texas MBA admissions team sees a lot of qualified applications each year. We know the hip business buzz words. We know the latest jargon. We recognize pat answers. Been there – done that. The BEST interviews are with candidates that are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. They listen carefully, keep responses on point, demonstrate that they have done their research (it’s okay – no, it’s good – if you have looked at other schools and can identify what attracts you to the Texas MBA), and know what makes them unique. The BEST interviews help us get to know the candidate in deeper ways than the application allows. We learn about who the candidate is, why an MBA is important, and why Texas. We answer intelligent questions (hint: don’t ask questions that can easily be answered on our website). So, show up to the interview on time – maybe even a few minutes early. Dress professionally. Be ready to share. Be proud but not arrogant, excited but not hyper, and thoughtful but not dull. Engage! The interview is a great opportunity to strut your stuff!
