I go for E. see may explanations below: cano wrote: Medical researchers, who have identified a genetic abnormality in parents of children with Down's syndrome, which they believe, instead of the age of the mother, may be the cause of this congenital birth defect. (A) which they believe, instead of the age of the mother, may be - Medical researches ARE NOT ,which, but WHO (B) which, they believe, may be more important than the age of the mother as - Medical researches ARE NOT ,which, but WHO (C) believe this abnormality and not the age of the mother as being -- being is often wrong, lets keep an eye on it. (D) believe that this abnormality, other than how old the mother is, may be it is closer , but the intended meaning is that NOT this abnormality , but mother's age . (E) believe that this abnormality, rather than the age of the mother, may be - here is parallelism is maintained and correct idiom is used X, rather than Y, where X=Y are parallel, here is the abnormality is parallel to the age.
OA later. please reveal the OA. kudos are appreciated a lot

Re: Medical researchers, who have identified a genetic [#permalink]

I am rewriting the original sentence with E AC : Medical researchers, who have identified a genetic abnormality in parents of children with Down's syndrome, believe that this abnormality, rather than the age of the mother, may be the cause of this congenital birth defect. Now by removing the first and second non-essential modifiers from above we have: Medical researchers believe that this abnormality may be the cause of this congenital birth defect. the sentence is awkward?
