I was laid off from a previous employer, which caused me to go back to a family business. During the interview, should I mention this negative aspect or try to not mention it? Technically, I was there on a contract that didn't get renewed. Is it better to mention this contract information? On my essays, I just said that I was let go.

So I definitely think you should present it as a "limited contract". What I would do is tell them that returning to your family business was the plan anyhow, but made sure that it MAKES sense!! Meaning what type of corporate job did you have before? And what type do you want later? And what exactly did you do in between? And how does it all fit together?
