Merit scholarships at top schools [#permalink]

Hi everybody,
I've been looking at how to pay for business school, and at the schools I'm looking at (H,S,W for now) there does not seem to be a lot of just general scholarships. There's financial aid, and then there's scholarships targeted at specific sub-groups (e.g. non-profit applicants, minority women, etc.). Does anyone know if there's also just general merit scholarship funds where a school will say okay, we really want this person let's offer them some money? If so, what are the chances of getting one of these? How large is the offer, usually? Thanks!

All schools have scholarships of some form. Your chances of these are as easy to define as the chances of you getting in based on knowing the number of beermats you can flip. Ergo, impossible. I think the best way to put it is that applying to business school is a big crapshoot. Applying for business school with view to getting a full scholarship is like a big crapshoot where you start with $100 and are going to keep playing till you become a billionairre.

Well yes, all schools have scholarships. And I've since found that Wharton does indeed offer merit scholarships. But HBS - including the scholarships mentioned here hbs.edu/mba/admissions/otherfellowships.html which are targeted to specific groups - does not ever publicly state that they offer general merit scholarships like Wharton does on their site (wharton.upenn.edu/mba/admissions/grants-and-fellowships.cfm). Stanford's financial aid office, and this might be just the financial aid office and not the GSB, specifically states: "The Financial Aid Office does not offer merit-based fellowships." (gsb.stanford.edu/finaid/types/gsb_fellowships.html)
Do HBS and Stanford just not see the need to compete for applicants with merit scholarships?

There will be some - they typically show the ones you need to apply for yourself. I think they feel less need to tell you, as that shouldn't be part of your decision to want to go to Harvard or Wharton.
