Hi

I don't understand the answer to the question. In the solution to the question, it says that "if the fastest machine can sew shirts in 2 hours, the rate is 1/2 shirts/hr". But if the fastest machine can sew 5 shirts, isn't it 5/2 = 2.5 shirts / hr?

ok sorry bout that
here's the Q

4 sewing machines can sew shirts in the ratio 1:2:3:5. The fastest can sew a shirt in 2 hours. However, the fastest machine breaks. how long will it take the other three machines to sew a total of 3 shirts?

1 shirt in 2 hr by fastest machine hence rate will be 1/2 shirt / hr

zeallous, I am not sure that the ratio stated in the question is number of shirts that machines can stitch in I hr or number of hours it takes machines to stitch these many shirts.

If these are ratio of shirts in a given time, then the fastest machine is the one that stitches 5 shirts.
