Millions of female bats rear their pups in Bracken Cave. Although the mothers all leave the cave nightly, on their return each mother is almost always swiftly reunited with her own pup. Since the bat's calls are their only means of finding one another, and a bat pup cannot distinguish the call of its mother from that of any other adult bat, it is clear that each mother bat can recoguize the call of her pup.

The argument seeks to do which of the following?

A) derive a general conlusion about all members of a group from facts known about reqresentative members of that group.

B) establish the validity of one explanation for a phenomenon by excluding alternative explanations.

C) support, by describing a suitable mechanism, the hypothesis that a certain phenomenon can occur

D) conclude that members of two groups are likely to share a certain ability because of other characteristic they share

E) demonstrate that a general rule applies in a particular case.

There is no hypothesis in the argument. That is why, C is wrong. The argument tries to explain how mother bats on their return unite with their pup by excluding the possibility that pup may recognize mother's sound.

hypothesis is not a conclusion, H is a supposition more or less like a possibility based on some information. It is not validated completely.

However, the word clear in Stem rules out that this a H.

Yes, fully agree. I think the key is to understand that the argument is excluding an alternative explanation

This question is very interesting!! What's the source?

Cheers

With these type of question I think it's best to think of the answer before even looking at the answer choices. Obviously you won't be able to come with exact wording but sometimes a good enough idea is sufficient to eliminate all the incorrect answers.

You are right. The Powerscore CR Bible says the same thing...But, I found that as the level of the questions gets tougher, it becomes really difficult to paraphrase(?) the answer
