minimum and maximum values [#permalink] New post 17 Apr 2013, 08:45
Hi

14) If f(x)=24+(2x+1)^2, what is the minimum value for f(x),and what is the value of X at which this minimum occurs.

f(x) will be minimized when squared term equals to zero

(2x+1)^2=0
x=-1/2. when we substitute -1/2 in the above equation, the minimum value of f(x)= 24

2) consider the quadratic equation f(x)=7- (x+1)^2 . At what value of X does this minimum or maximum occurs?

The maximum occurs when the perfect square itself is zero. this will happen when x+1=0, or x=-1.

These 2 problems are form mgre e qualities and inequalities (page 172,173). There is a same method for finding minimum or maximum values. Please some body explain the difference.
