In Answer choice D, "Carrying as many as seven passengers" and "Compared with most sport utility vehicles" are both suppose to refer to "minivans," but the sentence structure here makes it seem like "compared with most sport utility vehicles" refers to passengers, which is incorrect.

D changes the meaning somewhat implying minivans cost less only when they carry seven people.

A is 100% Correct

Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers - cost less

This statement means that when minivans are carrying as many as seven people hold the following attributes and implies that they might not when not carrying these people

Statement A says Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and compared with - . This is simply a statement of fact

[quote="eybrj2"]Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,
get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride.

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,
B. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, they cost less,
C. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers, in comparison with most sport utility vehicles, and have a lower cost, they
D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,
E. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles the cost is lower, and they

In the above sentence we are comparing some traits of minivans and SUVs. "carry as many as seven passengers" is not the part of comparison. It is just a fact about minivans. We are not saying anything about how many passengers can SUVs carry compared to minivans. Keeping that and parallelism in mind :-

A. Correct : Minivans X and , compared to SUVs, A, B, C and D .....
B. modifier *which..* implies that minivans which carry seven passengers have the aforesaid traits
C. parallelism problem
D. modifier *carrying....* implies that minivans which carry seven passengers have the aforesaid traits.
E. modifier *which..* implies that minivans which carry seven passengers have the aforesaid traits

Features compared between minivans and SUVs - cost less, get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride.
excluding the feature of as many as seven passengers.

A uses way too many "and"s, D improves on this but at the same time incorrectly uses carrying as many as seven passengers....A is better but then does incorrectly use "and"
