I'm 1/16 Persian, is this a minority, and would I be able to claim as such on the application?

Hey Devon --

Most schools' apps ask you to identify your ethnic background (if you're comfortable doing so - it's not usually required, at least not for U.S. programs). You could share with them your Persian (plus whatever else) ancestry. However, this probably doesn't qualify under what most schools consider to be minorities - that label typically refers to the underrepresented U.S. minorities of African-American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, and Eskimo. We don't get many people from those ethnic groups applying to bschool and there's always interest in increasing their numbers.

There also aren't as many Persians though, so your heritage certainly does help you in the diversity category.

Hope that helps! Let us know if we can clarify further.

Hi Devon,

Simply put, no, it isn't classified as a minority class. If you look at it strictly from those races included when reporting, it's what Essay Snark mentioned (Hispanic, African American / Black, Native American). Therefore, if you are looking for your racial background to bolster your application, it won't.

While not many Persians are in B School, it isn't that rare either. If you are going to call attention to this, you should have a very good reason for doing so. In other words, if you use it in any other place other than the application itself (where they ask you to select from drop downs, etc.), then it should make the story stronger. Otherwise, you'll look like you're trying to play that card and it won't be very useful to you.
