+1 for B, because of parallelism between "between owning the producers of these items, a practice known as backward integration, and buying from independent manufacturers", and correct choice of idiom.

Removed D because there is no helping verb for facing and usage of facing is not a subject here so need helping verb.
Removed E because change in meaning and looking awkward.
Removed A as in B usage of "between" makes more sense as problem is asking between two choices.
Removed C shows like Producers get problem in both "own the producers of these items" and "to buy from independent manufacturers, a practice known as backward integration" not in slection of any one.

B. The idiom is between x and y. This is correctly used in B.

+1 for B.

This is a very good question to brush up the SC strategies. On first look, the problem looks a bit scary, since the complete sentence is underlined. But on reading the Sentence completely, the Grammatical errors are evident.

Vertical scan of answer choices clearly point to B, and the problem is nailed :)

I ruled out A,B,C... as all of the use the word "equipments" , which is wrong.
I chose 'E' between D and E.

COnfusing...
Is this an official gmat question???

I don't think it's a good idea to reject an option based on just one word. Although I agree with you that most of the options have problem with "equipments", there are far more serious problems in other options. "Equipments" may just be a typo.

@ SujaiKarthik

1. Please refer to the P.S in the original post. You will find an answer for your doubt.
2. What is wrong with equipments
3. This tutorial passage’s main intention is to confuse and intimidate the student in order to train him or her to overcome those hurdles.

I think the problem with equipments is extra "s" after "equipment". As far as I understand, "s" is not needed to make it plural. Equipment by itself is supposed to be plural. I have read this in Manhattan and also verified on couple of posts on internet. Do you think the use of "equipments" is acceptable? Please let us know.

The preference for 'equipment', (a collective noun form) seems to emanate from as in the same form as in ‘furniture’ and ‘fish’, which are used more in plural circumstances than in singular; that apart, let us consider this situation. We do not say that a car is an assembly of several original equipment. We do say that it is an assembly of several original equipments. So when manufacturers require various types of equipments, all as widely different from one another as windshields, headlights, engine valves, carburetors, steering and seats etc, etc, then, it will be prudent to use equipments than equipment, IMO.

In any case, equipment or equipments isn’t the core issue here . The critical issues are unidiomatic usages, style errors such as fragmentation and wrong placement of the appositive phrase leading to misplaced modification and distortion of the original intent.

B. Idiom between x and y. That leaves A and B. B is correct because it modifies modern producers and A does not.
