This sentence intends to demonstrate contrast between "most large companies" and "off-the-shelf" companies' usage of software. Therefore, we need a contrasting transition phrase. (C) Whereas is the best choice to demonstrate contrast here.

Actually, the text is not about companies; rather, it is about two types of software: customised and off-the-shelf software.

But I agree with the answer.

I would also pick AC "C" as we are trying to contrast the two different types of software.
In my opinion "whereas" does the best job of doing exactly that, with A being the closest contender.

The question tests one's understanding of the sentence. Here the only answer that will make sense is C because C shows the comparison between customized CS and Off the shelf software

Most large companies prefer X software because of Y reason, whereas Z software requires ABC.

Try to replace other answer choices at place of "whereas", they will seem faulty.
