(E) Fewer self-centered parents than generous parents are good listeners I'd prefer to go with A because, all other statements either cannot be deduced or their validity cannot be established firmly. What is the OA?

IMO, Answer is D
We know that SOME parents who are self centered are good parents. We also know that ALL good parents are good listeners. Therefore, SOME parents who are self centered are good listeners, and vice-versa will also hold true.

I would choose E

D for me. Some self-center parents = good parents => good listeners. => Some good listener parents are self-center => D.

(B) Some parents who are good listeners are not good parent. (C) Most parents who are good listeners are generous. (D) Some parents who are good listeners are self-centered. (E) Fewer self-centered parents than generous parents are good listeners A - The word "all" should be an indicator that this answer is incorrect. The wording is too strong and the conclusion is "good parents are good listeners" and not necessarily "good listeners are good parents". B - This is probably true and deserves consideration but it is never fully implied anywhere. C - The passage states that both generous and self-centered can be good parents, but not necessarily. D - This is my choice. Some self-centered -> good parents -> all good parents -> good listeners. E - Passage doesn't touch on ratio of self-centered to generous that are good listeners.

Good question... Even I felt for A first, then I thought it can;t be that easy or straight forward. Then I read again and again and came up with D.

Then I read again and again and came up with D. Any reasons for D? Can we apply conditional reasoning here and diagram this one? Also , I want to start a discussion so as to correctly infer the scope of such types of questions. The question divides PARENT category into two parts viz Generous Parents(GeP) and Self Centered Parents(SCP).Says MOST GeP are good parents(GP) and SOME SCP are also GP. In addition, it states all GP are good listeners(GL). My question here is that, taking into account that you have not yet read the answer choices, can we bring another type of parents into picture here? I believe we can. Lets say we have 100 parents, out of which 51 (MOST) are GeP , then out of 49 parents left , SOME are SCP. Now, SOME from a pure logic standpoint can include ALL ( as SOME is logical opposite of NONE). This means that either 49 parents can be SCP or lets say 40 parents can be SCP and 9 belonging to different category of parents. that in fact can be NOT GOOD PARENTS( As asked in my question). I am really confused about this part.. Need your help guys !! Thanks in advance, -V

The common sense says that you cannot reverse the direction of inference. if A then B <> if B then A Choice D is just doing this. How can that be an answer? think critically Do you agree?

A is OUT for the same reason. Reversal in direction of inference.

heh interesting question, was stuck between (A) and (D), i had to go with (D) as time was running out. i guess the main difference was the strength in wording between ALL parents & SOME some parents.
but you guys make some good points about the reversal in direction, almost looks like they are trying to trap you with picking an incorrect answer.

interesting question.... A,B,C can be eliminated by the reasons stated in many of the explanations given.. Between D and E.. We all know that " if A-->B is correct then B-->A is incorrect and only not B--->not A is correct" Option D violates this rule by saying "good listeners are good parents"... So how is D, the correct answer?? Can any one help me with this issue???

D is obvious here . some parents who are good listeners are self centered . it is stated that some self centered parents are good parents and all good parents are good listeners. therefore some self centered parents are good listeners. now it becomes obvious . consider a set of good listeners . it has a subset of parents who are self centered. hence D

A is not the answer as it reverses the logic. Good parents are good listeners. But good listeners are not necessarily good parents. B won't work either because good parents are good listeners. C How do we know that? D makes sense. E The discussion isn't about the number of parents who are good or bad or generous or self centered.

D over E because we are unable to compare the number of self centered vs the number of generous parents.
