My answer is D

"Picture...as resembling" sounds redundant

D it is.

"picture as" is correct. Eliminate B and C. "if they have any image..." suggests use of "would". D satisfies that.

Why if they have is ok?
Because the author uses if they have, I think this sentence is not in unreal condition. Accordingly, would in D is not suitable.

My choice is C. Imagine someone to be sth is a correct phrase.

I will go with C as well.

in D:
as is incorrectly used to compare two nouns:
William Randolph Hearst - and - the caricature portrayed..

most people today ,

today indicates present tense.

Interesting. ..... :-D

I think the answer is D as well. we have unreal condition here.

If + have+.... would.... only D uses that structure.

but OA is A.

Paul, Can you shed some light, why D is not the correct answer. we need the conditional rule here.

I am afraid considering every ‘if’ clause as subjunctive and add on the modal verb ‘would’ each time may mislead us. First, this is a simple conditional sentence; this is not a subjunctive sentence, which either speculates or implies impossibility. So normal rules of a conditional sentence will apply. So D is out.

Picturing is something more concrete than imagining. Therefore, C does not carry the same depth of intent as the text does. In addition, ‘imagine him to be like” is unnecessarily wordy.
B is wrong because ‘picturing him to resemble’ is wrong idiom.
E is gone because of the wrong phrase ‘ as being similar as’
I conclude A is the most appropriate
