In this problem, first of all pay attention to parallelism of the context.

Most recovering heroin addicts seek to be free of (what?) drug dependency and (what?) others' prejudicial treatment as well.

The word drug dependency is not parallel to other's prejudicial treatment.
So A is incorrect, thus u need to choose, the option which is parallel.
B) both and also is incorrect phrase
C) both and also is incorrect idiom
D) both... but also is incorrect idiom
E) both ... and ... is parallel, using as well in this context should be OK. So it is the correct answer.

Please, give me kudos if you like my explanation.

I believe that there is no right answer at all. I tryed to find out the sourse and the explanation on other forums, but found only surprised people and upset GMAT instructors from different prep schools.
Personally for me, I chose E, but still, I don't think that GMAC would give us such choices.

Comparing to A, E seems superior - it has parallel construction "both of...and of....", but has redundancy.
The answer choice A does't have parallel structure - "...free of ....and others' treatment...", and also has the same redundancy.
Of two evils choose the least. :)

Hi Guys,

This is a good example of how the GMAT SC likes to clarify items in a phrase of parallelism. The original is slightly confusing in that it it not completely obvious what the A and B are. By using the 'of' a second time to introduce the second item in the phrase of parallelism (A and B), the 2 items are made more obvious.

Unclear: Addicts seek to be free of dependency and treatment...
They seek (A) to be free of dependency and (B) treatment?
Or, they seek to be free of (A) dependency and (B) treatment?

Clear: Addicts seek to be free both of dependency and of treatment...
They seek to be free both (A) of dependency and (B) of treatment.There is not other way to read the sentence when it is written this way!

Sarai's GMAX tip for SC: Your #1 goal with SC is to create a CLEAR sentence. Grammar and conciseness serve the paramount goal, namely, CLARITY!!

The idiom here is free... of. "Free... from" would be correct when expressing freedom, as in, "... freed from captivity..."

The only reason "as well as" is not redundant is that it was used for stylistic emphasis. If not for the intention of emphasizing, it would have redundant.

Cheers to all for good explanation!! Just an afterthought!!

I narrowed it down to B & E

The idiomatic structure is : Both X and Y. For the sentence to be correct X has to be parallel to Y.

In C X = of drug dependency ; Y = also of prejudicial treatment. This extra also defeats the parallelism.

In E: X = of drug dependency ; Y = of prejudicial treatment. Parallel.

Hence correct option E.

Some concepts first:

1. And & also will not go together - A is out
2. Both and also will not go together, meaning also is nor required – B and D are out.
3. Both of drug dependency and from prejudicial treatment is not parallel. C is out
4. Both of drug and of prejudicial treatment- parallel and has no redundancy- E is the right choice

Hi Folks,

Let me chime in by saying this problem looks fishy to me--(A) is probably the best of the available answers, but the GMAT will generally consider "and" and "as well" as redundant. But without the source of the problem, I can't probe further. Unfortunately, since the original post was from 2007, I doubt we'll see the first poster explaining what was the source of this problem.

Well, add one more skeptical GMAT instructor. There is no way a correct GMAT answer would include "both A as well as B" or "both A and also B." There is no acceptable answer here.

And Igor10's larger point is correct as well: you should be careful about SC questions whose provenance you don't know. Most questions I see on this forum from "other sources" would never pass muster as GMAT SC questions.

incorrect -not parallel, "of" is not perfect here
(B) both of drug dependency and also of prejudicial treatment.
not parallel "also"should not be there
(C) both of drug dependency and also from prejudicial treatment.
same issue as (C) has
(D) both of drug dependency but also from prejudicial treatment.
"but also"is negative contrast-not intended here in meaning; not parallel as well.
(E) both of drug dependency and of prejudicial treatment as well.
correct ; parallel ; "as well"can be used in the end of the sentence.

'and' and 'as well' are redundant, secondly ('free of drug dependency' and free of prejudicial treatment') or ('free from prejudicial treatment'), which one is correct 'free from' is correct form of idiom I guess, so I chose 'c'. Please explain why the answer is 'E'.

Hi Kiran,

E is correct. I will give you reason. If you remember Idiom is BOTH X and Y.
In this Idiom X and Y should be parallel.

(A) of drug dependency and others' prejudicial treatment as well. -- Not Parallel.
(B) both of drug dependency and also of prejudicial treatment. -- Not Parallel ( of and also of)
(C) both of drug dependency and also from prejudicial treatment. -- Not Parallel ( of and also from)
(D) both of drug dependency but also from prejudicial treatment. -- Not Parallel ( Of and Also from even has not qualify to Both X and Y)
(E) both of drug dependency and of prejudicial treatment as well. -- Parallel. ( Of and Of)
P.S also should not come with Both.(as Both include two things.)
