here's what a gmat instructor thinks of the question.

"All of the answers are horrible - this is neither a real GMAT question nor a reasonable facsimile thereof either."
http://www.beatthegmat.com/good-one-t19474.html

i agree with him. i can't understand the placement of 'as well' in E. using 'both' and 'as well' in the same sentence will lead to such awkward construction.

I picked E....Parallel structure "...both of...and of...". The inclusion of "as well" in option E is not warranted but E is the better alternative.

A will not be the answer ...

i think for A to be correct we can rearrange the sentence in this way
--> of drug dependency and of others' prejudicial treatment
-->of drug dependency and others' prejudicial treatment

of X and of Y
Of X and Y...

E beacuse of //

Rest has obvious errors so could easily get rid with POE.

How can E be correct??

if 'Both is being used then 'as well' at the end does not make sence. Although the use of parallelism is correct in this sentence. Therefore I chose option A.

Most recovering heroin addicts seek to be free of drug dependency and others' prejudicial treatment as well.

both X and Y should be the correct parallel structure here

(A) of drug dependency and others' prejudicial treatment as well.
incorrect -not parallel, "of" is not perfect here
(B) both of drug dependency and also of prejudicial treatment.
not parallel "also"should not be there
(C) both of drug dependency and also from prejudicial treatment.
same issue as (C) has
(D) both of drug dependency but also from prejudicial treatment.
"but also"is negative contrast-not intended here in meaning; not parallel as well.
(E) both of drug dependency and of prejudicial treatment as well.
correct ; parallel ; "as well"can be used in the end of the sentence.

correct idiomatic construction both and -- of and of parallelism choice E

(A) of drug dependency and others' prejudicial treatment as well. - Of is missing for parallelism
(B) both of drug dependency and also of prejudicial treatment. - and also not preferred
(C) both of drug dependency and also from prejudicial treatment. - and also not preferred
(D) both of drug dependency but also from prejudicial treatment. - both and not both and but
(E) both of drug dependency and of prejudicial treatment as well. - Correct

Relied bit on luck as well

please discuss the correct answer...[/quote]

I went for B....eliminated E for the redundancy of "as well" but I guess "both...and also" in B is redundant too so whoops...

well, i first chose E, but on a second thought, i choose A, bcos, drug dependency is an entity while, others' prejudicial treatment is another entity which must be addressed as well, A, i hope am right

Yes E is correct. I tried to explain why A is incorrect.

Just understand the meaning of part of option A : Most recovering heroin addicts seek others' prejudicial treatment as well.

Authors intent is just opposite that addicts want others not to do prejudicial treatment with them.

Can anyone help me why E is the best option? both B and E are parallel and both are redundant, so both have issues? IMO this question is poor constructed.
