Moving into high tech with no relevant work experience? [#permalink] New post 17 Jun 2013, 12:58
Good afternoon. I am heading to McCombs this fall. I come from a chemistry/science background, but I love technology and I'd love to work in the tech industry. How difficult is it to transition into high tech with no relevant work experience? Technology has always been a hobby of mine so I always keep an eye on the industry. I can also do basic computer programming and the likes.

I have a feeling it would be pretty much impossible for me to to land a product development job with a large tech company, but what about finance/marketing roles? I'm thinking Google (obviously very competitive anyway so I know my chances are slim, but are they even open to someone without experience?), Microsoft, Apple, Intel, AMD, etc.

I'd like to hear any input. Thank you very much.

Tech companies do not require relevant experience to gain entry as an MBA. The main thing is that you need to demonstrate interest in the industry. Brushing up on tech blogs would create good conversation starters. Given that you are going to McCombs, I think Dell would be a good company to put on your list. Despite the recent decline with Dell, I think with privatization of the company, it may be exciting times to work there.

If you want to gain work experience before applying to business school, what are some position titles to keep an eye out for that are entry level? Does anyone know? I'm also a hard science major with a masters but all my experience is lab related.

Should I search for analyst or consultant positions if I want to gain non-science work experience? I don't really know where to begin but once I start to look for a new job, that is what I'll be searching for. I'm still pretty young 25 years old and I have 2 years of industry experience only.
