MS Finance - Fall 2014 - with an IT experience+career break [#permalink] New post 26 Nov 2013, 04:52
General Profile: 30/Indian/Female

GMAT: 710
TOEFL: 113/120

Education :
1.B.Tech – Computer Science and Engineering from one of the renowned universities In India - CGPA 8.26/10
2.PGDM/MBA – Marketing and Systems from top 25 B-School in India –CGPA – 3.27/4

Work Experience: 43 months. 3 years experience in Software QA and 8+ months as a Business Analyst with leading software services firm
As a QA Engineer at Honeywell, my client was Bank of America - I was responsible for validation of security panels and a supported software
As a business analyst, I have worked in Finance module - AP, AR, and General Ledger for a US manufacturing giant
Currently on a long break for personal reasons.

Why MSF? My goal is to work in the areas of Enterprise Risk and Finance - handling business transformation projects in the Financial services domain. I am looking to leverage my IT experience and further my knowledge in Finance.

My concerns?
1. Would my break really matter (around 3 years) for MS program- I can explain the reason. I have been taking online courses in coursera in Risk Management and Quantitative Methods in Finance.

2. I satisfy the prerequisites for MSF (Accounting, Micro and Macro economics, and corporate finance) for some MSF programs.

3. I am confused between Villanova and Vanderbilt. Which one would be a better option to me given my background and experience. Do I have any other choices apart from Villanova/Vanderbilt?

4. I am not really particular about IB career as I am interested in Enterprise Risk/Finance IT systems implementation in a consulting role.

Please evaluate my profile. This is really important for me as I have to meet the deadlines.

Your GMAT is great and you have sizable work experience. The fact that you don't want to do banking is good as you most likely would struggle trying to land a position. I think you'd be competitive at both universities, but you should look at other schools also. Why did you pick those schools in particular?

Thanks MSFHQ for your inputs.

I picked Vanderbilt because they teach Finance for people with no background in Finance and the career options are not strictly limited to IB/Equity research.
As for Villanova, I liked their coursework

The other programs that I am looking at are:
Brandeis MS Finance
Rochester Institute of Technology MS Finance
Pepperdine MS Finance
SMU Cox MS Finance

So I have a shot in these programs? Any better options than the ones listed?
