MS in accounting without an undergrad degree in accounting [#permalink] New post 24 Apr 2009, 09:06
Hi all. I have a graduate degree in Engineering and want to switch careers into Accounting. I am planning to apply for MS in accounting but I only found 3 schools in the top 15 (UT-Austin, USC, UNC) that offer a program for students who don't have a formal education in accounting. I have 2 questions:

1. Are there other good schools that I am unaware of which offer MS in accounting for people without any formal education in accounting?
2. Is it wiser to give gmat, then study the pre-req courses for an year or two at a community college and then apply for MS at more universities?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Firstly, MOST ( and I do mean MOST) MS Accounting programs are for both undergraduate accounting majors and non-accounting business majors. Many also offer the program to the non-business majors (like yourself) but they DO tell you that you will have to take MORE non-accounting business CORE basic classes for you to graduate and qualify for 150 hr CPA requirement. That's why even if the program is offered to non-business major undergrad students, they tell you to pursue MBA-Accounting instead because the requirement will be pretty much the same.

Secondly, all schools require GMAT. Most top schools will accept you with 650+ GMAT with higher quant score between the 2 breakouts.

Studying the pre-req classes at community college is not a good idea since:

1) Not all schools will accept them as transfer credits for the program itself

2) Those classes can be taken at the school

3) Most MS Accounting programs minimum requirement is undergraduate BA/BS/BBA degree.

Checkout the list of top accounting school rankings in the forum and expand your research. You will find more options there.

Here's from someone who is switching from ENGR to Accounting.

MBA is for more general courses (IB, PE). Only do MS acct if you only want to work in accounting for the foreseeable future.

Most MS schools require you to either take some foundation courses in Accounting (Intro, Intermediate, Audit, Tax) and some will require additional courses (Finance, Mkt, Org Behavior.) It is rather late in the cycle to apply now, but IF you want to start this fall then you need to apply now and also maybe take some summer courses (preferably at a 4 year college, can be distance based). Some schools offers boot camps or requires you to be non-acct majors to qualify (See USC and UNC and Villanova)

Otherwise instead of the standard curriculum you may need to take additional courses there to graduate (additional summer or so.)

Take the GMAT, and learn about acct ASAP

Good luck applying!!!
