Multiplying both the numerator and denominator of a positive, proper fraction by 3 1/2 will either yield an A) increase, B) decrease or a C) result that will stay the same.

I tried this. I picked a positive, proper fraction (1/4) and multiplied the numerator and denominator by 7/2. Based on the above, the only setup that made sense to me was: 1 * (7/2) / 4 * (7/2).

I have 2 questions:

What does "Multiplying both the numerator and denominator of a positive, proper fraction" mean exactly?

From what I understand the answer is C. How?

If the positive proper fraction is n/d, multiplying both the numerator and denominator of n/d by 7/2 means (n*7/2)/(d*7/2) --> = n/d

Forget that the number you're multiplying is a fraction. For ANY number X, multiplying it by another number Y and then dividing it by Y is always going to give you X. unless Y is 0. This holds true if X or Y are integers or fractions.

A postive proper fraction is of the from a/b, where a and b are both postive integers and a is less than b.
