My 360 Feedback...... [#permalink] New post 30 Sep 2004, 13:49
Linda/Hjort:
I have a question for you guys.....I work for a Fortune 100 Company. As a part of my leadership development, my company invested in a 360 degree Peer/Mgmt Review Feedback Process. My scores for "Trust & Integrity" was a 4.3/5.0 (avg. score from more than 12 people - senior mgmt, peers, proj members, etc). According to our review guideline anything above a "4" is good.
The question i have is, will a 4.3/5.0 be viewed positively....Or will AdComm for HBS/W/GSB wonder "why is it only a 4.3/5 & not a 5/5)?? Because i wanted a "true picture" [not a rosy overview], i chose reviewers who were on both ends of the spectrum..... Both Antagonists/protagonists of my leadership style.

thanks for your advice. I am afraid that I can't help you with your question. What would be great though is if you could take the Math section and I could take the verbal section. Then, we could both end up with a great score

Hi,

The numeric scores do not seem that informative in isolation- the comments of the reviewers would be far more interesting to the reader. Further, since we do not know the distribution of scores, it is difficult to tell whether a 4.3 is a strong score or not.

Linda/Hjort:
I agree with your comments about including "comments" from the reviewers. Here is what i found out:

Survey Rating Scale:
Not at all = 1
To a small extent = 2
To a moderate extent = 3
Toa considerable extent = 4
To a Great Extent = 5.

Integrity & Trust - Over All

Type of Rater ---- # of Raters ----------- Avg
All Other Raters ---- 9 --------- 4.2
Self ------------- 1 ------ 4.8
Direct Manager ----- 1 ---------- 4.8
Indirect Manager ----- 1 -------------- 5.0
Customers ---- 5 ------- 4.7

Should i include these #? Or No.....?

Though I detest the abuse of the "it depends" I think it applies in this case. Is there a specific essay question you are addressing with this information?

I hate the "It depends" answer too.....I'm trying to figure out whether i can use this as "arsenal" to "quantify" my "integrity/trust". I want to show all schools that i'm applying (H/W/GSB) to this Fall to be able to see me a a person with loads of integrity/trust. I've got 2 other good examples but want to use this as a "backdrop".........

Can you ask your supervisor to refer to this aspect of your review in his letter of rec and exlain the scale?

Unless you are specifically asked a question about integrity, I am leery of submitting an essay saying "Look how honest I am!" I agree with the friend of ours who once told his son, "If anyone ever insists he is honest or you can trust him, hold onto your wallet -- tight." But, if a recommender comments positively on your integrity and trustworthiness in a rec, that's something else entirely and very positive. And clearly if you are responding to a question, referring to this aspect of your company's review process could be relevant.
Good luck!
