my chances at H/S/W [#permalink] New post 20 Dec 2012, 00:49
Dear All,

I'd appreciate it if you gave me your oppinion on admissions prospects for top schools when I apply this year. My profile is as follows:

White/USA Citizen/Male/29

-3.5 GPA in English & Chinese language from Brown (andover/deerfield/etc. for HS)
-720 GMAT
-6 months at top real estate developer in London (Tishman Speyer, etc.)
-3.5 years at a small/growing private equity real estate firm in Shanghai (small, but the leadership is from top firms including goldman, etc.)
-2.0 years (at appliucation, 2.5+ years at matriculatioon) in asia real estate investments at top middle-east sovereign wealth fund, based in ME, but traveling regularly to asian markets including china/korea/japan and australia
-fluent in mandarin and conversational in cantonese chinese
-extra curriculars: weak point. an athlete, but didn't play for brown, just club/intermural, and not much charity/club work
-pay: high, even by industry standards (300+ all cash, roughly 200 guaranteed)
-recs outlook: exceptionally good (big shot financiers who i worked closely and consider me like a nephew)

General summary: highly international, great work experience, languages, but very bad EC and only "okay" academics/tests (though I am ivy)

trying to get in at H/S/W and "backup" at Columbia, Booth, NW, MIT

Thanks,

Pete

Sounds like a good profile. I don't know enought to tell you about your chances. But give it a shot, submit a strong application. Not much you can do in terms of EC if you're looking to apply now. But the rest sounds good and in your EC focus on the athletics part

Based on what you present here, I would say that you are "competitive" at H/S/W and with a strong application would be "more than competitive". You have to remember that the candidates who are applying to these caliber programs are the best in the world all of whom have amazing credentials so you need to distinguish yourself from the best of the best. To best improve your chances at these programs, I would recommend that you apply R2 and that you really focus on your international career -- as this is one of the experiences that admissions values the most.

The one concern about your candidacy is lack of extracurricular activities/community service. To be direct, it is not as competitive as the candidates who I have seen interviewed/admitted R1. This factor can be slightly diminished if in the essays you can speak about what you will participate in at school and further in your career. While not ideal, I do not view it as a death sentence for the top programs.

As for your backup schools, with a strong application and a good interview, you would be a "extremely competitive" at these schools.

Thanks Kimberly. This is pretty much where I put my own chances. Very confident about getting into at least one of Columbia/Kellogg etc. and feel I have a just fool's chance at Harvard (but not "no" chance). I'll think of you if I decide to use a consultant(s). By the way, the profile above is me next year when I end up applying. I've already taken gmats etc., but I decided not to apply until next year since I'm making some solid money and i figure I might as well put a bit more in the bank first + get promoted to senior associate prior to applying... i figure 29 is still not too old to go (I'm 28 now).

If you're not applying until Fall 2013 then you can use the next 9 months to strengthen the ECs/leadership portion of your profile. For people who have fallen off the EC train for several years I often recommend thinking back to what you've been involved with in the past (sports, mentoring, fundraising, whatever) and try to do something similar now (doesn't have to be with the same organization or anything, just similar type of cause or activity). This shows some continuity and that you're not just picking up activities just for the sake of an application. 9-12 months (depending on which round you apply in) is plenty of time to get meaningfully involved in one or two activities. That will definitely help your chances at H/S/W.

Pete, looking very good. I wouldn't worry about the lack of ECs too much, if you have one good story you could use, it'll likely be enough. If you are one of the best in your industry (as your pay indicates) plus with the scores you have you are certainly competitive. Just write some killer essays...

Hi Pete,

I think you are definitely competitive at H/S/W. One of our clients just got into Wharton w lower GMAT than yours. Brown undergrad w couple years of work experience in Asia.

You have great international work experience, and already progressed well in your career. The only thing I would caution you is to be really clear about your career goals, and why you want to get an MBA. The MBA has to help you get to your short-term career goal. If you can achieve your short-term career goal w out an MBA, then the investment doesn't make sense for you. You would also have to show that you can network and achieve your post-MBA career goal, since most of the on campus recruiting would probably not pay as well as what you are making now.

I would love to work with you if you are interested in getting admissions consulting help.

Good luck!
