Any advice for CR?

Hi, x2suresh,
I think CRs are one of my strengths, and I didn’t need any special training to improve them. I just did all CRs in OG, that’s all.

So my advice will be very general:

1. During the last week before the exam, it may be worth doing about 10 CRs a day – from official sources, of course.

2. Watch carefully for what exactly is asked and what exactly the conclusion tells. CRs often try to mislead you.

E.g., the conclusion may say something like that: ‘We should implement the described course of action in order to increase our profits’ and then you are asked to weaken it.

If you did not read carefully, you might be left with the impression that you are asked to deny that the profits will increase. And some answers that may seem right at first could say smth that under some conditions, the profits will not increase. However, the right one might be telling not that the profits won’t increase, but that they will increase, but not as a result of that given course of action.

So be very careful and check the wording of any CR. Basically, treat CR as a word problem of some sort. Pure logic is the key there; the same as in quant.

3.You might check the verbal forum for some nice tricky CRs.

Hi bdumpala,

There is excellent collection of links by walker on probability/combination:
https://gmatclub.com/forum/7-t56486
Helped me a lot!

As for descriptive statistics, you might check some basic textbook on statistics as well (mean, median, std. dev.) – these topics are usually in the very first chapters. Just look through them.

For tables/vienn diagrams, I just did the search through math forums here and compiled the list of about 15 – 20 problems of various difficulty, and then began solving them in a row. Such a strategy did polish your techniques – because for these problems, there’s no ultimate formula; you need to work out the general approach to them, and that’s it.

Since your exam is on Friday already, I don't think it will be wise to spend very much time on this topic alone. Just do a couple of problems and review the concepts.

Good luck to you! Stay calm!

Thanks again, walker! Your posts were invaluable for me, just as they were for so many other people here!

Hi, KumarGMAT,

Paper Tests are retired GMAT tests back from those days when GMAT was a paper-and-pencil test. They are available for sale at https://www.mba.com for $25 for the set of 3 tests – total 9 tests. I only had the time for 8 of them.

They are good mainly for verbal, because quant is too easy there. Verbal is of the same difficulty as on the real exam. You will see some overlap with OG, but still, the majority of questions are new.

I would advice to use these Tests if you need to improve your verbal and have run out of all other sources of original questions (OG, GMATPrep, Powerprep). After doing a couple of Kaplan and Arco tests at the beginning of my prep, I’ve become a big fan of original questions :) … But if verbal is not your weak area, you can do well without them.

Good luck!
