My first attempt: 480 (33Q 23V) - need advice / experience [#permalink] New post 28 Sep 2009, 08:49
Hi all,

I've been studying for the GMAT for 5 months and I got a 480. Quite disappointing.
My verbal skills aren't so good but I used to score higher in any simulation test (45, 44 on the GMAC's test).

What I did right:
- Eating healthy food
- A full night of sleep
- Not to touch the books the day before
- AWA went well... no problem at all

What I did wrong:
- I came too early (I was in the test center 6:40am when I was supposed to e there 8:00am!). The traffic in my city (Sao Paulo) is unpredictable so I preferred the early over the late.
- As the temperature was quite high, I asked the test supervisor to lower it a little bit. She told me she could not lower the temperature as it was centrally controlled. I accepted and got back to the test. It was so hot that I was feeling the need of drinking something in the middle of the test. I had to had asked the test supervisor: "Well, then ask someone to lower the overall temperature!".
- I think I ate too much (even the healthy food) during the break... 1 coup of natural yogurt (200ml) and another of diet milky shake another (250ml), both in each break.
- In the middle of quant session, I kind of stressed over two or three very (VERY) hard questions and spent too much time solving it. I did solve them but I lost precious time... When I saw the clock, I had 20 more questions to answer and about 22 minutes left... Then I started to rush... which was not good.

Well, that's my story...

I will practice more and try more times.

Can someone share experiences with me about that? Any advice? Do you agree or disagree with what I said?

:)

Sorry to hear about it.
I think timing is very critical in GMAT test. I took practice test last week and I spent 8 minute on 1 and 6 minute on another tough quant problem. At then end I had to rush and after those two questions I got 12 wrong out of 22. I did not even realize that I spent so much time on those two questions. I knew I spent a lot of time but dint know that I spent 15 min on just two problems.
I would suggest you try taking more CAT test. They give you good breakdown as to how much time you are spending on each problem.
If you want to go one step further, MGMAT allows you to set a time limit on each problem. So you can do like 2.5 minute per problem. After that you will have no choice but to guess.

Good luck for the next test. Dont give up. You are almost there.

Missed your post - sorry to hear about your experience - definitely a tough score to get.

What were some of the practice scores you got? You mention GMAT Prep - can you give a full score?

Also, see this thread for some ideas about retake: should-i-retake-gmat-thread-retaking-gmat-strategies-83339.html

Hi BB.
Thanks for answering!
You always give great ideas.
My practice tests was not going so good. I made one 590 (45Q and 27V, I guess).

The other attempts were something from 42 to 46 in Q and from 14 to 17 in V. Q never lower than 42, even when I did not know anything about GMAT.

I knew I was not like "READY" for the test, but 33/23 were still quite disappointing, regarding that I completed all exercises of OG11 & 12, OG verbal 1st, Kaplan Premier, mostly all of OG quantitative 1st, and some of Kaplan 800.

I started to review grammar rules in Manhattan Sentence Correction Guide and I realized that I forgot almost everything about modifiers (maybe because there are about one and a half month I finished doing the book's exercises). I guess now I am with the memory refreshed with SC rules.

I forgot to say: I take too much time answering questions.
In both SC and CR (especially in CR), I take more than a minute, just to understand what is written. Thus, I take more than two minutes in these questions.
It is awkward, because when I start reading a book (I am reading now The Great Gatsby, as suggested), I read pretty fast now... understanding almost everything.

Did you guys face something like that in the beginning?

Part of optimizing your time for answering questions is developing time saving strategies and also following strategies from Manhattan and others.

For example - read the question the CR first, and then expect the passage to weaken/strengthen, etc. After that, try to answer the question in your mind, and not read answer choices until you have done so, go through the answer choices only then.

It has a lot to do with 2 things:
- Understanding of fundamentals
- Test taking strategies

Usually, we under-emphasize the test-taking strategies at GMAT Club, but they are important when you need to save time on questions.
Write out your (Kaplan's, or Manhattan or PowerScore) strategy for all 3 verbal question types (CR, RC, and SC). Then keep taking verbal tests (just the verbal portion) to get yourself comfortable with those strategies.
