My GMAT journey is about to end and I need a few advice [#permalink] New post 30 Sep 2011, 06:09
Hi everyone !

First I would like to thank every one participating to this forum, which have been really helpful to me.
Although I did not participate that much, I spend much time here, and I learned a lot.

I will take the exam in 4 days (next Tuesday !), I know that there is not much I can do to really improve by then, but I still have a few question and I would like to have your advice.

I started to prepare the GMAT almost 3 weeks ago and I mainly studied with MGMAT books and OG 12th.

My scores on the MGMAT and GMATPrep CAT :
09/12/11 MGMAT 1 640 (80%) Q44 (73%) V34 (72%) no AWA
09/15/11 MGMAT 2 640 (80%) Q44 (73%) V34 (72%) no AWA
09/19/11 MGMAT 3 700 (93%) Q46 (79%) V40 (91%) no AWA
09/22/11 MGMAT 4 690 (91%) Q43 (70%) V40 (91%) no AWA
09/26/11 MGMAT 5 700 (93%) Q47 (81%) V39 (89%) 1 AWA
09/28/11 MGMAT 6 740 (98%) Q51 (99%) V40 (91%) 1 AWA
09/30/11 GPrep 2 730 Q50 V40 1 AWA

I have some questions regarding my last test (which I just finished !). I made 8 mistakes in quant (no consecutive mistakes) and 6 in verbal.
I did not manage my time well during the quant part, and I know that there is one or two mistakes that I should not have made. Anyway, I just hope I can get at least 50 on the real test.

However, I am a bit confused about the verbal. I hardly imagine how I could make less than 6 mistakes, even if I worked a lot more. Plus I had only two consecutive mistakes. I did 2 in SC, 1 in CR and 3 in RC

Do you know how many mistakes are made by people who are over 40 in verbal ? I find it strange that 6 mistakes can make the difference between 40 and 51 in verbal :(

What would you advise me to do during the next 4 day ? I thought I would do one more CAT and maybe review my mistakes. I have done every question in the OG 12th !

Thank you for reading me :)
I will post a debrief when I am done with the GMAT !

As you get to the higher percentiles it is harder to move up.

For example the other day I made only 2 mistakes on math and got Q50, whereas I've got Q50 with 7-8 mistakes before. That just means like 95% of people get 30/37 or less, then the next 4% all get 2-7 wrong meaning to get 99% you have to get even less.

As you get higher and higher each point requires even less mistakes. You could get a V45 with 5 mistakes, but a 47 may be like 2 mistakes and a 49 0-1 mistake. It is not linear.

Hopefully that is clear.

Hi,

Please how were u able to move from a Q43 to a Q47 and Q51 in that short period of time. I will be taking my test in 2weeks and will really appreciate pointers on upping my quant score and tips on DS also. Im currently scoring in the Q43 range on the MGMAT but not sure what strategies to use at this point. I think my DS is maybe weak and i spend time on it and then i have to rush towards the end. At the same time, i only spend time because i dont wanna be getting the questions wrong. dunno .. im in a dilemma

Hi Xora, 6 mistakes and a 40 in verbal sounds about right to me. A 45 is the 99th percentile in Verbal, and once you get above around a 40, any missed question or correct question can change your raw score by a couple points.

As an example, I have taken the GMATprep test 1 twice. The first time I had 4 mistatkes and got a 44 in verbal. The second time I missed 2 questions and got a 47. On GMATprep 2 I missed 4 in verbal and again got a 44.

Good luck with your upcoming exam, please post a debrief when you finish. My test is scheduled for this upcoming Saturday (Oct 8).
