My journey from 480,my plan to 700+it is a mission!pls help [#permalink] New post 03 May 2011, 06:41
After almost 2 months of hard preparation (maybe not hard enough), I have increased my score only 100 points!!! I scheduled the 3rd attempt on 30th May!

GUYS, I am a bit lost though, I don’t know where to start with all I have!

I was able to increase my verbal significantly, thanks to Manhatten SC and Powerscore SC especially. CR became at the end also relatively easy. However, I somehow managed to ignore RC almost completely as I thought I would anyway not improve much, so I didn’t almost do RC at all, I have been always afraid of this section!

As for Quant, it is really disappointing as I managed only to improve little after all the QUANT books and exercises! I have no idea why though, as I have been quite confident with math since high school…

Guys, please help me out here, the 3rd attempt is going to be my last chance before the school deadline (I have obtained an conditional offer on GMAT from the school and I need to obtain at least 650+ to get the full offer!! Of course 700+would be better and it is also my target)

I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!

Books used:

Before the first attempt, I have only used Kaplan Premier with about 2 week’s preparation as I totally underestimated the evil GMAT; as a result I got a 480 low score!
Thanks for the amazing resources and posts here in the forum, I realized I got to take it seriously and bought following books
• All manhatten 8 books plus manhatten companion (RC book didn’t finish)
Powerscore SC bible
Powerscore CR bible * (didn’t use yet as I thought manhatten CR was sufficient)
OG 12 (went through everything except RC part)
OG verbal review * (RC skipped too)
OG Quant review * (didn’t use it yet)
• The Princeton Review * (didn’t touch as I read its not good)

Score History:
• 1st official attempt: 480 (Q 39, V 18), in Jan 2011
• Manhatten CAT1: 590 (Q 45, V27)
• Manhatten CAT2: 600 (Q 41, V32)
• Manhatten CAT3: 640 (Q 43, V34)
• GMAT Prep 1: 670 (Q47, V35)
• Manhatten CAT4: 600 (Q 40, V33)
• Manhatten CAT5:590 (Q 38, V34)
• GMAT prep 2: 560 (Q42, V26)
• 2nd official attempt: 580 (Q 40, V30), in April 2011

Available Resource not yet used
• QUANT:
o OG QUANT Review
o Manhatten Question Banks
• VERBAL
o Manhatten RC
o OG 12 RC excercises
o OG Verbal RC exercieses
o Powerscore CR
o Manhatten question banks

CATs + excercises not yet used
• Manhatten 6th Cat
GMAT club Tests
• GMAT prep excercises
• 2 Kaplan CATs
• 2 Priceton CATs

My plan is to review all the books i went through and try to master the concepts and the do lots of exercises!
Also, I would like to start reading the books I didn’t use initially, for example Powerscore CR, even though I am quite comfortable with CR but for harder problems I am still weak I think.
As for RC, I don’t know how much actually I could improve by reading the manhatten RC book and doing exercise but I guess I can’t just pretend RC doesn’t exist. I really hate this part, don’t even want to attack it! Any advice on RC?
So this is my plan for next 30 days! Please let me know what do you guys think! THANK YOU!

One think I have learned so far in my GMAT journey is not to ignore any section. It can affect your overall scores. For RC, try to read easier passages first. Passage that interests you. If you are a history buff like me read about Woodrow Wilson's passage. Do not look at any questions yet. Just read. After reading the passage ask yourself these questions
1) What could be the apt title for this passage? Or how can you describe the passage in 5 words of your own?
2) What conclusion one can draw based on the passage?
3) Once you have identified the conclusion, find out if it is backed by enough evidence?
4) Find out how each paragraph contributes to the whole passage. For example one paragraph could describe the example and next paragraph could lead to the conclusion based on the example.
5) While reading passage pause and talk to yourself about what author is saying. If you find what author is saying is ridiculous mock him. Say things like "what bullshit....how can you say that without interrogating..or this that..watever". Doing this will give you answers automatically.
6) Don't time yourself for first few passages. Get comfortable first with RC.

It helps me. Hope it helps you too.

OG 12 RC exercises
OG Verbal RC exercises
Above yes.
I am planning to buy Aristotle RC. http://gmatclub.com/forum/review-of-rc99-by-aristotle-prep-107742.html
Though do not do this unless you are comfortable with RC and wants to go a bit further. It has most boring passages ever.
