A, I think:
It must be Neanderthals that were without language so C, D and E can't be the answer. B compares a species to a member of another species so this lacks the parallelism (right word?). But A satisfies all the requirements.

=> a vocal tract resembled Neanderthals of apes???
What is those refer to??
There's only plural noun "those" can refer to is "Neanderthals"
In this light, A is definitely wrong!
(B) Neanderthals had a vocal tract resembling an ape’s
Correct!!
CDE are out 'cuz "so were probably without language" need Neanderathals as a subject.

Yeah, B looks like the correct one, I didn't take "those" into account while comparing A with B. Thanks dwivedys and freetheking.

Neanderthals is a collective noun referring to a group... so in general they all have this same tract... was that your question?

But i am trying to understand how you can have a collective vocal tract. Also, 'Neanderthals' doesn't seem to be singular. If you read further in the sentence, you have 'were' referring to 'Neanderthals '

One can reach B by elimination.
However, Neanderthals( plural ) had a vocal tract ( singular object ) is a unusual formation followed by so were ( plural ) .....
It might be confusing but its a lot better than B in any case.
