Neanderthals...were without a language.
So only A or B.
If we use "apes" in A, then we will have a pronoun reference problem. "They" can refer to apes also.
Hence, B is the appropriate choice.

Also, the those in those of the apes has no referrant. You have vocal tract, so you need that of the apes

Most of us are Struck with A & B.
(A) Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes
(B) Neanderthals had a vocal tract resembling an ape’s
Look at the bold part in A, that's the mistake.
So B.

A - 'those' has no referent
C,D,E - would result in the vocal tracts having a language
B is best.
