Necessary to Study Vocab Words for the GMAT? [#permalink] New post 08 Jul 2010, 13:54
Just as the title says, I was wondering, is it necessary to study vocabulary words for the GMAT? I've heard mixed opinions on this so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

it'll probably only help marginally. i suggest spending your time reviewing other things such as
1) SC
2) reading more "dry" books/articles

GMAC did a study about this and they found that if you are a native speaker, then value of studying words is absolutely zero. If you are a non-native speaker, make sure you are on a comfortable level with all of the terminology used on the test (math section and question text).

From what I've read on this forum from the position of non-native speakers, I can say that the GMAT is not so vocabulary oriented as say the SAT. But a solid grasp of English will be very beneficial. The better your command of the language, the less energy it will take you to solve problems.

As long as you're comfortable with reading English at a reasonable pace, then there is no need to study vocabulary. If you're still a little worried about this, then read some GMAT Fiction! This will help you for SC, RC, and vocabulary.
