need 3 recommendations for my application [#permalink] New post 14 Jul 2011, 18:54
My app requires 3 recommedation letters. I have worked full time in my current job for over 4 years, however, the powers-that-be tend to play musical chairs with management on a frequent basis. I have had 6 managers in my 4+ years but I have never changed jobs in the company. I have been under my current manager for a few months now but I have only met her once as she does not live in the same state as I do.

Who do I get to write my recommendations?

You should get letters from those who can best represent you on your application. It doesn't matter if it's not your direct supervisor (and if it's not, just simply explain it briefly on your application much like the way you had right here), adcoms know that not everyone will get it from his/her direct supervisor. So what it boils down to is really just finding those who can speak on your behalf and in your best interest.

I Would say pick the manager who has worked with you the most or admires you the most and with whom you had interesting experience to share with Adcom/ in your essays

Hi SaveTheClockTower,

I hope the following is of help.

In general, your recommenders should be individuals who know you well from a work setting. Your primary recommender should be your supervisor. Almost all schools will want to hear from this individual with whom you interact frequently and who is responsible for managing you directly and can speak to your development, strengths, and weaknesses.

Beyond the supervisor, you can select one to two additional recommenders, again from a work setting or potentially from another setting in which you have demonstrated leadership. If you are not sure whether a recommender is appropriate, think about the types of questions they will have to answer. These questions are often frequently linked to your leadership skills, your performance on teams, communication skills, ethics, and more. I often have clients who want to use a professor for a recommendation. A professor is usually not in a position to comment on these thingstraits. If the recommender you are considering cannot say much more than “you are highly intelligent” or “you are a hard worker,” then he or she is probably not the right choice. However, you may decide to ask someone who has supervised you to some extent in an extracurricular setting. For example, if you have served on a board or done volunteer work for this individual’s organization, he or she might be a perfect choice of someone who can comment on important skills from a different perspective, in a different setting.

Hope this was of help.

Cheers,

Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team

Personally I'm hoping for diversified recommendations:
- Someone within my extracirricular/volunteer field
- A Professor from my undergrad
- Manager at my current job

Hi,
Seek recommendations from folks you've known for the longest duration and the ones who can therefore speak most strongly about your leadership abilities and team skills. If previous managers have moved on to new roles, they can speak to the fact that they continue to follow your professional development closely and have seen you grow as you have progressed professionally.
