Need Help to improve my score from 560 Q43 V24 [#permalink] New post 22 Dec 2012, 06:51
I gave my first attempt on 19th Nov 2012 and scored 550 Q46 V20. Initially, i thought it was because of my anxiety and restlessness about the GMAT and future resulted me in getting this much lower score in GMAT. I prepared for almost 4 months and followed below mentioned material.

1. OG13th, quantitative and verbal review
2. MGMAT strategy guide for quant score improvement.
3. Powerscore CR bible

I took few GMATMock exam from GMAT Prep and Manhattan GMAT

1. Manhattan GMAT1 580 Q43 v31
2 Manhattan GMAT2 640 Q44 V34
3 Manhattan GMAT3 640 Q42 V35
4 GMAT Prep1 640 Q43 V21
5 GMAT Prep2 640 Q43 V21
6 Manhattan GMAT4 650 Q44 V3

My GMAT appointment was at 1:30 and due to lot of tension and anxiety i didnt took my breakfast and lunch. While going through Verbal section i got an headache and was not able to concentrate on question. First RC couldnt understand the passage and clicked answers in havoc. For CR and SC none of my concept worked.

I thought this is all because of stress which i took before the exam and planned to retake GMAT on 20th December 2012 (as XLRI require student to submit score taken on or before 22 Dec 2012).

For the last one month i only concentrated on verbal (verbal score was 20), as i knew my weakness lies in RC as i never answered more than 5 out of 13 questions correctly.

During this period i took couple of more tests

Kaplan diag test 630
Manhattan GMAT 610 Q43 V31
GMAT prep 600 Q48 V28

I also changed my way of study, didnt tried to think much on the end score rather prefer to judge my improvement on individual section.

At the end on 20th July during my second attempt again i ended with very low score of 560 Q43 V24.

Now, my concern is what change should i make in my approach and prepare for next attempt and which source material should i follow. As i believe i have already gone through with official material couple of times.

I need advise and guidance in what change should i bring in my study and how should i approach towards my end goal.

Please help, really in need of it.

I am not let myself down and will fight until i achieve my end dream

Hi Ankur

I noticed that you took the Manhattan CAT's. I would suggest that you generate the assessment reports of all your tests and analyse them. On how to analyse:http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/analyze-practice-problem.cfm might help. The assessment report does some of the analysing for you topic wise for both quants and verbal. I would suggest that you could find out what kind of mistakes you make in the different sections. Rank them in order of how commonly these topics are tested on GMAT and how long it would take for you to fix them.Fix the ones you can easily correct first. Avoid worrying about scores, and only look at getting strong in the commonly tested topics.

For RC, this is the technique I used:
Read passage sentence by sentence.
Pause after each sentence to understand meaning.
When I read the next sentence i would map on how it added to the previous sentence.
I would also pause at end of each paragraph to understand its general context.

RC main purpose - eliminate all choices which don't deal with RC's main topic. This brought me down to 2 good choices, which sounded equally good. I would if all paragraphs of the RC dealt with the answer choices.I eliminated the one which didn't.

RC inference - similar technique for CR inference. Go back to passage and see if answer choices tie back to it.If it doesn't eliminate it

RC specific detail - After reading question,go back to passage and read a sentence above, the sentence mentioned, and a sentence below it to make me understand context.Eliminate answer choices after this.

RC strengthen/weaken - similar technique for CR strengthen/weaken

RC tone - eliminate choice which are incorrect if they do deal with RC topic. Then look at RC tone - no opinion, positive opinion or negative opinion.Eliminate based on this.

For CR & RC I learnt to be wary of extreme words - all, most, only, none. Answer choices like these are correct only if backed by the passage. GMAT traps are common with plays on these.

I did the e-gmat SC course and it helped me quite a bit. After doing the course I did OG 13 SC questions and analysed them. If SC concepts is not your problem, then I suggest that you just analyse your SC on manhattan CAT's. I noticed that even though I knew the concept of pronoun precendents I would forget to check them in SC.It was easy to avoid this once I discovered I was prone to doing it.

For quants, similar analysis would help. And you are the best person to do it,since you know what you are strong in,and weak in.

All the best and hope this helps!

Cheers
Vandy
